Canada’s Western provinces are aggressively pursuing strategies to strengthen their base of knowledge-based firms operating in their communities. This conference will bring together major players from Western Canada’s innovation community to highlight opportunities and challenges facing entrepreneurs, investors, researchers and policy makers in creating commercial activity around knowledge and technology. Panels: From customers needs to commercial success Business leaders share how they stay on the leading edge and develop new products and services, and tell us how government and post-secondary institutions can help and how they cannot. Investing in technology firms Successful angel, venture and institutional investors will describe their approach to investing in technology firms and how they ensure a high success rate in their investee firms. How do universities fit into the commercialization mix? University executives and their investor, industry and government partners will discuss the role universities play in supporting successful commercial ventures. What can governments do to enhance commercial success? Senior policy makers will outline the policy goals and objectives of government commercialization initiatives, and describe successes and failures of specific initiatives in the past. Wrap-up A panel of experts will review the day’s proceedings and recommend next steps.
