Counter-terrorism R&D has been given a $46-million boost with the awarding of funds for 24 projects under the government’s new CRBN Research and Technology Initiative (CRTI). The projects involve clusters of federal laboratories collaborating with private sector firms and academic institutions to increase and accelerate Canada’s S&T capability to respond to terrorist threats. The successful projects were among more than 400 synopsis proposals and 56 full submissions made to CRTI’s first competition. CRTI is being positioned as a pilot project for a proposed federal program called Federal Innovation Networks of Excellence (FINE) to enhance the collaboration and the capacity of federal S&T.
